Our mission is to motivate the individuals, empower the communities, conserve and expand the natural resources and build a green future through collaborative action.

Rooted in Green:
Nurturing Forests, Sustaining Life

Treelands Foundation is a not-for-profit (section 8) company registered under the Companies Act 2013. It symbolises the passion of retired forest officers to protect and expand the natural resources and ensure equitable sharing of its benefits. It is managed by very senior retired forest (IFS) officers with high academic credentials backed by decades of field experience in forestry, agroforestry, ecology, environment, wildlife, biodiversity, watershed management, rural development and so on.

The cumulative experience of our team members spans over a hundred years. Each one has a rich personal experience in nurturing the nature. We provide consultancy on a variety of conservation related issues. We undertake project preparation assignments and implementation of field works. We also provide monitoring and evaluation services.

Experienced Team

We are a sizeable group of retired but enthusiastic forest officers from Karnataka with a rich experience in conservation of nature and working with communities to promote trees outside the forests conservation of nature in forested landscapes.

Equitable Development

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Planting trees benefits our environment in numerous ways. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, combatting climate change. They increase air humidity, provide wildlife habitat, and improve air quality by absorbing pollutants. Additionally, trees prevent soil erosion, reduce noise levels, capture dust particles, and contribute to healthy local water cycles. All these factors are crucial for a safe and healthy neighbourhood.
Opt for native trees and shrub species whenever possible. Native plants are well-adapted to your local climate and support regional biodiversity. Consider factors like available space, soil type, irrigation access (especially for summer months), and your planting goals. Avoid planting invasive species or trees from outside your ecological zone.
The southwest monsoon season is the ideal time for planting trees. During this period, the soil is loose, warm, and well-moistened, allowing seedlings to establish a strong root system. Planting before or after the monsoon season can hinder root development.
There are many ways to participate! If you have sufficient land, plant trees on your property. If space is limited, consider planting with permission on nearby public lands. Here are additional ways to get involved:
  • Raise awareness about the importance of tree planting and protection.
  • Participate in tree planting events and encourage others to join.
  • Organize or lead your own tree-planting campaign.
  • Donate to reputable NGOs focused on tree planting.
The Karnataka Forest Department offers free or subsidized seedlings to the public through its network of nearly 700 nurseries across the state. Seedlings are typically distributed or sold between June and September. Contact your nearest Range Forest Office for details..
Several challenges exist, including limited space, finding suitable native seedlings, resources for digging pits, manure, seedling transportation, and planting. These activities require time and money. Post-planting care is essential and requires a committed landowner to ensure the trees' survival.
Newly planted seedlings face various risks, including transplant shock, water scarcity, damage from people and animals, and competition from weeds and nearby trees. Good care is needed to help them thrive.
Proper planting techniques are crucial for successful tree establishment. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, but no deeper than the root collar. Plant the tree at the same depth it was in the nursery. Backfill with native soil and water thoroughly to remove air pockets. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Give good protection and water the plants regularly (ideally twice a week).
While planting seedlings is a common practice, other robust methods can be more efficient in some situations. Here are two options: Utilizing Existing Rootstock: If native tree rootstock (the underground portion of a tree) is still present at the planting site, you can take advantage of its potential. Here's how:
  • Care for the Rootstock: Identify and tend to the existing rootstock. This may involve removing weeds or debris around it.
  • Loosen the Soil: Loosen the soil surrounding the rootstock to improve rainwater infiltration and promote new growth.
  • Encourage Sprouting:Under care, the rootstock will naturally send up new shoots that will develop into trees much faster than planting seedlings.
Direct Seeding with Native Seeds: This method involves collecting and sowing native tree seeds directly on the planting site. Here's the process:
  • Seed Collection: Gather seeds from native trees in your area.
  • Seed Treatment: Some seeds may require specific treatment to improve germination rates. Research the appropriate techniques for the chosen tree species.
  • Pelletizing (Optional): For very small seeds, pelleting (coating them with a protective material) is necessary for easier sowing and improved germination.
  • Sowing: Sow the treated seeds directly into loosened soil before the monsoon season begins. Plant them at a depth equal to the thickness of the seed.
  • Protection: Protect the sown seeds from animals, heavy rain, or other potential threats. Occasional weeding and overhead clearance will encourage good growth.
Professional Guidance Recommended: Both these methods require professional guidance and supervision. The success rate will be much higher and the plants will be more robust.

Treelands Foundation is a non-profit organization (NGO) that focuses on providing support and guidance for tree planting initiatives. While we don't operate our own nursery or independent planting programs, we offer the following services:

  • Free technical advice to tree planters.
  • Planting and maintenance services for landowners at reasonable rates.
  • Assistance with planting on public lands when supported by CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) funds.
  • Site visits and consultations for trees that are struggling to grow.
